MINI Cooper - iPod Control

Ever since we added a new Alpine Head unit to our Honda Element, with iPod playback capabilities, I've been wanting to do the same with the MINI Cooper. However, I have been unable to find a reliable and affordable unit with an orange screen that would match the MINI's instrumentation. And I had some other requirements:

1. Had to have speed sensitive sound control (Standard on the MINI).

2. Had to utilize the audio controls on the MINI steering wheel.

3. Had to play MP3 cds.

4. Had to be affordable.

After deciding that it would cost over $400 to meet all of my requirements, I decided that money was the most important factor, and decided to buy an aftermarket BMW iPod control that would plug into the MINI's factory stereo. I opted to go with the USA Spec IPOD Interface. (I decided that I could live without MP3 cds.) Here's how I did it.

The instructions from Crutchfield did not specify how to install the adapter. But I already knew how to get the radio out.

First I removed the knee bolster under the steering wheel by pulling down and rotating it out. There are two metal posts that clip into the dash to hold it in place. Just give it a good pull and it will release.

Next I opened the glove box to gain access to the dash trim screw. This allowed me to pull the trim away from the dash, so I could remove the downtubes.

I then removed the 4 bolts holding the downtubes in place. Wiith the dash trim pulled out a bit, I could wiggle the downtubes out.

Now the stereo is accessible. I pulled it out and found that the plug didn't fit. Great.

I called Crutchfield Tech Support who said that the unit plugged into the pre-wired CD changer in the trunk. (Again, not stated in the Crutchfield instructions.)

I located the changer link behind the right trunk panel. I tested it - it worked. So now I had a new problem... how was I going to control the iPod from the trunk while driving?

I looked at the master sheet instructions from Crutchfield, and it detailed how to install speakers and remove body panels. So I thought what the heck - give it a shot.

The iPod adapter came with a 16' cable - if I could get it back to the front of the car, I would be happy. I removed the rear seat by lifting the child lock holder and pulling the seat out.

With the seat out, I could get access to the rear speaker panels, and maybe start routing the cable back to the dash.

Following the rear speaker instructions, I started (gently) pulling the passenger side panel away from the car. I wanted to be sure that I could get the thing back together if I messed up.

After I pulled out the door gasket just a few inches, and released a few clips in the panel, I looked thru to the trunk. I could see the CD changer port.

Using fish tape, I pushed the cable thru the tight fit.

Once I found the cable, I pulled it thru.

I then looked for the next cable route. I realized that I could run it thru the foot panel all the way to the dash, so I pulled out a lot more of the door gasket.

Using a covered pry-bar and my fingers, I gently removed only as much foot panel as I had to. I routed the cable thru the small gap.

I finally reached the glovebox, and found that I could pull the wire out of the top of the panel. This is also where I would tuck the tiny white USA Spec box.

I removed the bottom "grill" on the center console, and (after several tries) routed the second cable provided thru the dash and under the glovebox.

I replaced the grill and ran the iPod connector thru the slots.

I pulled the iPod connector thru my dash organizer, which is where I decided to house the iPod.

I replaced the downtubes, dash trim, and knee bolster. I replaced all door and foot panels. (Carefully) I then pushed the door gasket back into place, and lastly reinstalled the rear seat. Now all I needed to do was connect both cables to the Spec box.

I found a groove under the glovebox, and I pushed the iPod connector cable into that space. I ran that cable from the center console to the right side of the car, where I had secured the white Spec box. I connected the iPod cable and the cable from the CD changer.

Presto! All done! Now I have great audio quality in the car from the iPod. I set the Spec box to allow me to control the iPod manually or with the stereo. Since I have limited stereo controls, I use the iPod controls most of the time. Total cost - $139
